Fans Prefer Traditional Games But Games-As-A-Service Dominates, Survey Reveals

In the past decade, the "traditional" game release model has seemingly been overtaken in interest, popularity, and commercial opportunities presented by the games-as-a-service model. A new study from GameSpot parent company Fandom shares some additional datapoints around this, helping to understand and explain what fans generally do and do not like about the games-as-a-service model compared to the traditional release setup. The Fandom survey found that fans generally prefer the more traditional release model over games-as-a-service because it requires less effort and obligation on their behalf. 61% said they preferred the traditional release model compared to 39% for games-as-a-service. The biggest reason why survey respondents said they don't prefer games-as-a-service is because they don't want to sign up for a subscription to play a game. Fans also reported that it's too much work to keep up with live-service titles. What fans do like about the live-service model includes how there is always something new and interesting to play in a game, along with being able to play for free. The World Is Getting Worse And Here's How It Could Affect One Major Game Company

Embracer Group, the Swedish gaming giant, has commented on the state of the world and how economic, geopolitical, and social issues could negatively affect the company's business outlook. The company says it will conduct a business review, with one possible outcome being to spin off some of its many subsidiaries and take advantage of a Swedish tax law provision in the process. In a section of its latest earnings briefing titled "Turbulent Times Create New Opportunities," CEO Lars Wingefors said he remains confident in the company's "decentralized operating model" with teams and studios spread around the world. However, he spoke candidly about how things could go south. "The world has changed for the worse in many areas, becoming darker in recent months. New Alien Movie Looks To Add Devs Star To Cast - Report

Deadline is reporting that Cailee Spaeny is in talks to star in 20th Century's new Alien movie, with Fede Alvarez (Don't Breathe) directing and Ridley Scott's Scott Free producing. Their sources aren't saying much more about the production, and 20th Century had no comment. Alvarez's pitch apparently impressed both 20th Century and Scott Free so they made this a top priority and an attempt is being made to get this production going and starting early next year. A recent script was delivered and the momentum has really started to pick up. This would be the seventh Alien movie, not counting the Aliens vs Predator spin-offs. A new trailer for SpongeBob Squarepants: The Cosmic Shake is here to show off all the languages the game is dubbed in. The trailer features a scene from what looks like the beginning of the game, showing off a brief couple lines of dialogue from SpongeBob and his best pal Patrick across the nine languages players will be able to choose from. These include English, French, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese, Polish, Hindi, and Indonesian. Fans who grew up with SpongeBob in any of those languages will also probably be happy to hear that all of the original voice actors are back too.
