Spider-Man 2 Is Doing Much Better Than 2018 Original In First-Month US Sales

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 launched at the end of October, and it put up big sales numbers. Circana, the company formerly known as NPD, has revealed that the game was the No. 1 best-selling game in the US for the month and it performed much better than the original back in 2018.

Spider-Man 2's launch-month sales were higher than the original game by a double-digit percentage, Circana said.

Spider-Man 2 achieved those double-digit percentage gains over the first game despite launching near the end of the month, on October 20. For comparison, 2018's Spider-Man launched on September 7, 2018. Snubbed At The Game Awards, Stray Gods Gets Grammy Nomination

The Grammy nominees for the video game category have been officially announced, with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical, and God of War Ragnarok being some of the big names lined up for a night of kudos. The Best Score Soundtrack For Video Games And Other Interactive Media category was only added in 2022 after years of campaigning to get video game soundtracks recognized, and the first winner of this award was Assassin's Creed Valhalla during the 2023 event. Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow Movie Finds Its Screenwriter

Ana Nogueira (The Vampire Diaries, The Michael J. Fox Show) is set to write Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a standalone feature in development at DC Studios. The project, part of James Gunn and Peter Safran's revamped DC movie lineup, centers on the Kryptonian cousin of Superman. The Hollywood Reporter was first to report.

Nogueira's involvement with the Supergirl project began in 2022 when Warner Bros. initially enlisted her to write a Supergirl movie tied to The Flash. However, the oversight of the DC arm by Gunn and Safran prompted a restructuring, leaving Nogueira's initial project uncertain. The Supergirl film is now integrated into a new slate, diverging from former studio president Walter Hamada's earlier vision for DC Films.

The plot takes inspiration from a comic book mini-series by Tom King, published in 2021 and 2022. The series aimed to redefine Supergirl beyond merely being a female counterpart to Superman. Xbox Game Pass Loses 7 More Games Soon, Including Multiple Battlefield Games

Microsoft has announced the next wave of titles being removed from the Xbox Game Pass catalog, and it includes seven titles in all, three of which are Battlefield games.

Battlefield 1943, Battlefield: Bad Company, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 are all leaving the catalog on November 30. These titles are available within the EA Play library, and that subscription is part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Their removal is tied to the servers for each game going dark.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is live with a new large-scale Zombies experience, featuring many familiar enemy types from old Zombies games. One little Easter egg allows you to pet the hellhounds in the mode and doing so will score you an achievement. Here we'll guide you through the steps to unlock the You Can Pet The Dog achievement for Modern Warfare 3.

In order to pet the hounds, you'll first need to blow up some zombies. You can use grenades, RPGs, or breacher drones, but one of the best methods is to use a LT53 Kazimir grenade. Other explosives are more commonly looted, but the LT53 Kazimir seems to always drop the Chunk of Flesh item you'll need. Blow up a horde of zombies or toss the LT53 Kazimir grenade at a zombie, until a dead zombie drops the "Chunk of Flesh" item.

Blizzard Art Director Who Invented The Name Warcraft Retires After 32 Years

Blizzard senior art director Samwise Didier, who joined the company in 1991 while it was still called Silicon and Synapse and would define the studio's art style, has retired after 32 years.

Didier's contributions to Blizzard were numerous. For starters, he came up with the name Warcraft, which came from his Dungeons and Dragons character at the time and was a riff on the word witchcraft. He served as an art director on Blizzard's major franchises from the very beginning, helping to create the developer's signature art style, a style that would look right at home on the cover of a heavy metal album. He created Warcraft's Pandaren race, served as a producer on numerous Blizzard titles, and has lent his voice, music, and storytelling skills to numerous Blizzard games over the years.

A Real Military Veteran Is Now An Operator In Call Of Duty, And He's The Rock's Cousin

One of the first DLC packs for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is a new Warrior Pack that supports the Call of Duty Endowment charity. The centerpiece of the DLC is a new operator who is based on a real-life military veteran, and this is the first time a real military veteran is a playable Operator.

The soldier's name is Ben. He is a 16-year military veteran and now a retired Navy SEAL. He was a member of SEAL Team Six and served in Africa, Afghanistan, and Iraq. He was he recipient of multiple Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart for being wounded in battle. He is also the cousin of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

The Marvels Has The Worst MCU Box Office Debut Ever

Captain Marvel might be the most powerful Avenger, but that didn't help the superhero's sequel at the box office. The Marvels just opened with the worst start ever for the MCU by pulling in $47 million domestically--$110.3 total when adding in international markets--according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Previously, 2008's The Incredible Hulk held the distinction for lowest debut ever for the MCU with $55.4 million domestically. But keep in mind that's not adjusted for inflation and back when the MCU was just getting started. The Marvels also came up short compared to DC's The Flash, which opened to $55 million domestically over the summer.

Captain Marvel opened to $153.4 million domestically in 2019 on the way to making over $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office. Needless to say, The Marvels has a far way to go to come close to those numbers in the weeks ahead. Pokemon And Xbox Are Both Getting Jewelry

Both Pokemon and Xbox brands are getting official jewelry, although they will be handled by completely different companies.

Tiffany & Co is creating a line of Pokemon necklaces in a collaboration with artist Daniel Arsham. Each separate piece has a Pokemon pendant dangling at the end. The six Pokemon featured on the pendants are Pikachu, Charmander, Squirtle, Jigglypuff, Cubone, and Mew.

The Pikachu ones are special, as they are made of 18-karat yellow gold, and the small ones cost around $9,900. The larger Pikachu one is about $29,000. The other Pokemon are made in sterling silver and cost $1,290 each. They will all go on sale on December 1 at the Tiffany & Co Landmark in New York and the Omotesando store in Tokyo. Steam Deck OLED Announced With Better Screen, Battery Life, And More

Valve has announced a remodeled Steam Deck model with a higher-quality display, better battery life, more storage capacity, and more. The Steam Deck OLED is still being called a part of the "first-generation" Steam Deck family, so it mostly packs the same internal hardware specs as the LCD model, but it's been improved in almost every other way. The upgraded model comes in two different storage configurations, as well as a special Limited-edition model. It goes on sale surprisingly soon, with preorders beginning on November 16.

HDR OLED display



The headliner feature is the new HDR OLED display, which Valve brags makes it the first handheld to sport such a screen. Since many games on Steam already have native HDR support, the new model will be able to display these without any further work or patches on the part of developers. The display is also slightly larger at 7.4", up from 7", due to a smaller bezel, and has a 90Hz refresh rate, up from 60Hz. The 1TB and LE models also feature an anti-glare etched-glass finish on the screen.

Thekla Inc. is hoping lightning can strike twice, as the company has announced that Braid Anniversary Edition--an updated version of the indie darling--is coming on April 30.

Braid follows the adventure of a young hero who is trying to save a kidnapped princess, but all is not as it seems. Grand Theft Auto 6 Will Not Be Affected By Potential Actors Strike, Take-Two Suggests

The threat of a video game actors' strike is looming after union members voted 98.32% in favor of authorizing a strike in September. In Take-Two's latest earnings call, CEO Strauss Zelnick was optimistic about negotiations having a positive outcome, adding that the development of GTA 6 is "completely protected" in case of a strike.

SAG-AFTRA is currently negotiating with a number of major video game companies on behalf of actors involved in video games, which include voice actors and mo-cap actors. The companies involved in negotiations include Activision, Disney, EA, Insomniac Games, Epic Games, WB Games, and Rockstar's parent company Take-Two.

As reported by Video Games Chronicle, Zelnick was asked about the negotiations during the Q&A section of Take-Two's latest earnings call. Starfield Abandoning Voiced Protagonists Didn't Spell Doom For Its Two Stars

When Bethesda abandoned plans for a voiced protagonist in Starfield, it gave the hired voice actors other roles within the sci-fi epic, reportedly an unusual move in video game voice acting.

Voice actor Elias Toufexis tweeted that he and Cissy Jones were originally the player voices in Starfield. Once the developer decided not to go forward with player voices, it cast Toufexis as Sam Coe and Jones as Andreja. According to Toufexis, "Games NEVER do this. Once you're out you're out. Good on Bethesda." Toufexis added that the effort work (i.e. grunts, exclamations of pain, etc.) was still voiced by Jones and himself. Jones did not add further context, but retweeted Toufexis.

Brutal Year For Game Developers Continues With Ubisoft Laying Off 100+ More People

The company confirmed to GameSpot that it is eliminating 98 positions from its Canadian workforce, and 124 positions overall in its latest headcount reduction. 2023 has been a year marked by layoffs in the game development scene, and the trend is not stopping.

Fortnite OG Breaks Its All-Time Player Records At Launch

Epic Games dropped a blast from the past last week, as the month-long Fortnite OG season--which brings back the game's original island arena from 2018--kicked off on November 3. The decision has already proven wildly popular, as the company has reported all-time records for both unique user counts and the number of hours played in the first 24 hours of the new season.

Over 44.7 million users logged into Fortnite during the first day of Fortnite OG, which according to Epic marks the game's most popular single day in its five-year history. Those player accounted for a combined 102 million hours of playing time, which is another all-time record.

Circana industry analyst Mat Piscatella added some more impressive context to this feat on his X account. Peter will share some words for his dearly departed and you'll earn the You Know What To Do trophy for your efforts. Like Insomniac's two Spider-Man games before it, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has a pretty easy Platinum Trophy to earn. There aren't really any especially unforgiving Trophies standing in your way, save for a notable exception that may have you scratching your head as you fruitlessly scour the entirety of New York City. To earn the Just Let Go Trophy, you'll need to find the science trophy Miles and Phin won together which you may recall from a flashback you witnessed during the events of Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

That's going to be tricky as it's quite small, meaning it's pretty well hidden despite sitting in plain sight. And if you haven't played Miles Morales, you may not even know where to start looking. Here's how to unlock the Just Let Go Trophy.

No Activision Blizzard Games On Xbox Game Pass Until 2024, Phil Spencer Confirms

As was widely expected, Xbox fans should not expect any Activision Blizzard King games to appear on Xbox Game Pass until 2024. When Microsoft closed its blockbuster deal to buy the Call of Duty giant this month, some thought Microsoft might put some ABK games on Game Pass right away, but that's not going to be the case.

Appearing on the Xbox podcast, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said Microsoft was not able to do the work to get any ABK games on Game Pass until the deal closed. That only just happened, so Microsoft is now "starting the work," Spencer said, according to The Verge.

Spider-Man 2's Fast Travel Actually Travels Remarkably Fast

Back in 2020, when Sony released the "Road To PS5" video describing the console's technological advances, the console's lead system architect Mark Cerny mentioned how players had to typically wait for "what is euphemistically called fast travel." Insomniac Games apparently considered that a challenge, as the fast travel system in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has received some incredible praise leading up to the game's launch.

Multiple videos have surfaced showcasing the game's fast travel system, which can sometimes load up an entirely new section of the game's map in mere seconds. Also, once Peter Parker or Miles Morales appears on-screen, they're already in full swing, which lets the player assume control while in motion.

But Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, a real-time, squad-based mobile RPG, sets out to replicate that sense of scale in the palm of your hands. During my hands-off preview of the game, I got a look at exactly how the gameplay intended to capture that and chatted with lead designer and NetherRealm veteran Mike Lee.

"We designed gameplay off what we wanted it to look like--what we wanted it to represent: the cutscenes," Lee told me. In Onslaught, you'll craft a team of four to five fighters selected from a roster of 50 MK characters and take on a squad of enemies in a standalone story-focused adventure that sees its heroes, once again, fighting to protect several realms under attack. Spread over 10 chapters, the story will unravel over 300 battles that feature the same level of theatrics and high fantasy of its mainline series. American Horror Stories Season 3 Trailer Brings Four New Horrifying Tales For Halloween

As a spinoff of the hit anthology series American Horror Story, American Horror Stories--plural--features standalone anthology episodes in contrast to season-long arcs. American Horror Stories has already so far gotten two seasons on Hulu, and will soon get a Season 3 on October 26. Created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk for FX on Hulu, this series premiered back in July 2021 with this upcoming third season being the first released timed for Halloween.
