Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Review Roundup

Ahead of its release later this week, reviews for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 have gone live. Following on from the events of 2018's Spider-Man and 2022's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the sequel teams both of New York's resident arachnid-themed heroes up for a tale that pits them against the likes of the Lizard, Kraven the Hunter, and Venom. Like previous Spider-Man stories, the Venom symbiote is first introduced as a powerful and corruptive force that attaches itself to Peter Parker, transforming the noble hero into a darker and more brutal vigilante before the two eventually separate and the alien organism finds a new host--and also gets much more swole in the process.

So far, reviews range are all highly positive. While some critics have pointed out that the game is more refinement than evolution and that the open world is full of the usual busywork associated with the genre, outlets have also praised the story, pacing, and improvements across the board to the established gameplay.

"There's quite a bit of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 that can be summed up as 'more of the same.' Granted, that's a good thing--both the original game and the Miles Morales-focused follow-up feature fantastic reimaginings of their respective Spider-Men, exhilarating web-swinging, and superb combat mechanics," Jordan Ramée wrote in GameSpot's Marvel's Spider-Man 2 review. "Who wouldn't just want more of that? And sure, more of what came before does mean that Spider-Man 2 retreads less successful ground, like the first game's buzz-killing science puzzles. Gaming hardware manufacturer Analogue has announced its next upcoming release, and for fans of the N64 era of gaming, this is shaping up to be the console to acquire if you still have a collection of cartridges from that Nintendo era. A reimagining of the N64 console, the Analogue 3D has been in development for three years and will ship with a wireless controller that has been designed by 8BitDo.

The marquee features on the Analogue 3D include "100%" compatibility in every region--USA, Europe, and Japan--4K resolution with original display modes that replicate specific model CRTs and PVMs, and four controller ports for multiplayer sessions. Bethesda Veteran Pete Hines To Retire After 24 Years Following Starfield Launch

Bethesda's head of publishing, Pete Hines, has announced that he will retire from Bethesda after 24 years. He mentioned that with the launch of Starfield in September, the timing felt right.

"This is certainly not goodbye by any means. My love for Bethesda and its people has never wavered, and I will never stop being part of this incredible community we have grown," Hines said in a statement. Omni-Man Joins Mortal Kombat 1 Roster In November, Full Kombat Pass Timeline Revealed

At the Invincible panel at New York Comic Con this past weekend, NetherRealm Studios revealed that Omni-Man will be the first downloadable fighter for Mortal Kombat 1, and that he will be available in November

A new gameplay trailer focused on Omni-Man was shown during the panel, which showed a Fatal Blow and two Fatalities ripped straight from iconic moments from the comic book and TV show. The trailer also confirmed J.K. Simmons will reprise his role in the game--as his voice can be heard threatening Liu Kang and Scorpion--while also highlighting Tremor as the first downloadable Kameo fighter.

Invincible Goes Interdimensional In This New Season 2 Trailer

The second season of Invincible premieres on November 3 on Prime Video, and if you thought the first run of the adult animated series was a bloody exploration of superhero action, then you're going to need to prepare yourself for some multiversal mayhem. After all, multiverses are all the rage these days! Starring Steven Yeun as Mark Grayson, an 18-year-old rookie hero who discovers a dark secret about his father and heritage, Invincible Season 2 sees Grayson on the mend after the catastrophic events of the previous episodes. With his father Omni-Man having left Earth, Grayson is more determined than ever to help the world as Invincible, taking on massive threats and saving the day. The big threat this season will be Angstrom Levy, a scientist with the power to travel to alternate dimensions. In an effort to expand his knowledge of the dimensions that he could safely travel to, Levy would enlist the aid of the Mauler twins to help him, but an ill-fated encounter would leave Levy disfigured and hellbent on revenge against Invincible.

Gen V's Graphic Violence Has More To Say Than The Boys

The Boys and its spin-off, Gen V, are some of the gnarliest shows around when it comes to blood and guts. The Boys makes its intentions known very quickly when A-Train runs through Hughie's girlfriend, leaving the latter holding her hands, disconnected from her splattered body. She's instantly killed so that Hughie can get angry enough to join up with Billy Butcher and the crew. The Boys' new college-focused spin-off, Gen V, is a violent show, too. Its main character slices her hand open to access her blood powers, and even just five episodes in, the show is hinting that her control over blood is more extensive than you can imagine. Gen V not only features one of the bloodiest opening sequences in any show that I can remember, but it's also much more creative with its use of graphic violence and other body-horror-style moments thanks to its protagonists.

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick Says He Will Remain In Role Until The End Of 2023

After 22 months of hearings, regulator approvals, and legal battles, Microsoft has finally acquired Activision Blizzard in a mammoth $69 billion deal. Now that work can begin on folding Activision Blizzard properly into the Microsoft and Xbox family, longtime CEO Bobby Kotick has confirmed that he'll remain in that role until the end of 2023 and will report to Microsoft's head of gaming Phil Spencer in his remaining months at the company.

"Phil has asked me to stay on as CEO of ABK, reporting to him, and we have agreed that I will do that through the end of 2023," Kotick wrote in a letter sent to Activision Blizzard employees. "We both look forward to working together on a smooth integration for our teams and players."

Kotick has served as CEO of Activision from 1991 to 2008, and after the merger of Activision and Vivendi Games which he helped engineer, he has carried on as CEO of Activision Blizzard. LOTR Gollum Developer Accused Of Unethical Labor And Using AI To Write Apology Statement

A new report claims that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum developer Daedalic Entertainment had a toxic and troubled workplace environment, which underpaid employees and encouraged crunch.

A video from German outlet Game Two (via IGN), alleges Daedalic entertainment enforced unpaid overtime, tried to pay staff below minimum wage, and fostered a culture of crunch. Game Two directly interviewed or exchanged emails with 32 people involved with Daedalic and/or in the development of Gollum.

The report alleges Daedalic exploited young employees and interns and underpaid them for their work. Executives at the company reportedly insisted employees to work late hours for no extra pay and normalized crunch as a regular part of the industry. One developer described the environment as "an atmosphere of fear." IGN reached out to their own sources, which confirmed Game Two's findings and claimed the company's problems were an open secret in the German games industry. Microsoft Reportedly Owes The IRS $29 Billion In Back Taxes

Ahead of its acquisition of Activision Blizzard that is expected to be finalized soon, Microsoft's finances are expected to take a big hit thanks to the Internal Revenue Service slapping the company with a fee for $28.9 billion in back taxes.

This hefty tax bill was spotted in an 8-K filing this week (via CNBC), and according to the IRS, Microsoft owes some big cash from profits that it made from 2004 to 2013. The IRS is disputing how Microsoft allocated its profits during this period among countries and jurisdictions in which it operated, but Microsoft argues that up to $10 billion that it paid in taxes have not been taken into consideration by the IRS and its new figures.

"Microsoft disagrees with these proposed adjustments and will pursue an appeal within the IRS, a process expected to take several years," Microsoft said in response to CNBC. "We believe we have always followed the IRS’s rules and paid the taxes we owe in the U.S. and around the world. Microsoft historically has been one of the top US corporate income taxpayers. Solace State's Exploration Of Power Dynamics And Queer Love Is My Favorite Cyberpunk Story This Year

The fall season is well and truly upon us, with tons of games releasing at a pace that I can barely keep up with. If you're similarly struggling to stay afloat with everything, you may have missed the release of Solace State--a visual novel roleplaying game in which you play as Chloe, a woman born as a genetic anomaly who can hack into the minds of other people to aid her efforts in navigating the cyberpunk-inspired world she calls home.

Though also visually stunning, Solace State's beauty lies in its story-- a compelling adventure about queer people of color being drawn into a conspiracy that threatens to plunge an entire country into a dystopian nightmare. It's a game that is both thoughtful and complex, encouraging you to stop and weigh the cost of rebellion against the risk of corporate hegemony, and it's also one of my favorite games of 2023.

I sat down with Solace State executive producer and director Tanya Kan to discuss how the game came together and the decision process behind stepping away from the neon lights, laser swords, and similar imagery to better promote the hacktivism ideals of cyberpunk. We also talked about the game's 31 endings--namely, which one people may want to avoid--and the agency given to the three romance options that Chloe can pursue. The Alan Wake 2 Soundtrack Was Custom-Made To Expand The Lore

It's hard to forget the soundtrack to 2010's Alan Wake. Featuring world-renowned performers like David Bowie, Nick Cave, and Roy Orbison, its music was pulled from various genres and decades to deliver companion songs as each TV-style episode came to a close. In Alan Wake 2, chapters are still presented like episodes, punctuated by licensed music. However, Remedy is going in an entirely new direction, partnering with the Helsinki, Finland-based Fried Music studio to create custom songs from artists from across the globe to bring each chapter to a close. The end result is a soundtrack that, Remedy hopes, feels modern, eclectic, and deeply woven into the fabric of the survival-horror story.

The reception to having Finnish rock band Poets of the Fall in Alan Wake and Control "was so positive that, ever since, I've been thinking that we should just go all the way and be a lot more ambitious with this, and make all the songs custom-created with different and really, really talented musicians," Remedy's creative director, Sam Lake, said in a recent interview with GameSpot. "Let's do different kinds of songs, but let's have them all be about the fiction and lore and an extension of the storytelling."

For Remedy's obsessive fanbase, "Space Oddity" over Alan Wake's end credits is iconic, and a fitting accompaniment to the game's weirdness. Foamstars Looks Like A Splatoon Clone, But It's More Interesting Than That

When Foamstars was revealed during May's Playstation Showcase, the internet's judgment was swift and brutal--it's just a Splatoon rip-off. Case closed. But after playing four rounds of suds-fuelled multiplayer action at Gamescom 2023, the reality is a little bit more complicated.

Foamstars is a four-versus-four party shooter game pitched by Square Enix as "filling a gap" in the online multiplayer shooter market. In a sense, it is, if you are absolutely determined to ignore the gigantic ink-covered squid in the room. The basic gameplay sees two teams of four players fight across a map, spraying colored foam that sticks to surfaces and damages opposing players, with developers promising a suite of adversarial game modes.

Every player can surf across foam--fast if it's your team's color, and much slower if it's the opposing team's. If a player is coated with enough foam, they are immobilized in a giant foam ball. Payday 3 Drops Denuvo DRM A Week Before Release

Just a week before its release, Payday 3 developer Starbreeze announced that it has removed the anti-piracy software Denuvo from the PC version of Payday 3.

"Hello heisters, we want to inform you that Denuvo is no longer in PAYDAY 3," said Starbreeze global brand director Almir Listo in a Steam update. "We look forward to seeing you in New York City! Happy heisting!"

It's unclear why Starbreeze decided to remove Denuvo so early, especially since the game isn't available to the wider public until September 21. Those who purchased the Silver and Gold Editions of the game can play the game now as they received the early access perk. Documents from Microsoft's legal case with the FTC have emerged online, and one key slide shows that Microsoft has no plans to bring The Elder Scrolls VI to PlayStation.

A page from the proceedings obtained by Stephen Totilo shows a breakdown of games and supported platforms, with The Elder Scrolls VI listing as being in development for Xbox and PC--but not PlayStation. The document also shows that The Elder Scrolls VI will be released in 2026 at the soonest and that it will not have multiplayer support.

Oppenheimer Is Now The Highest-Grossing Biopic Ever

The creation of the atomic bomb has proven to be more popular than one of the greatest rock bands at the box office. Oppenheimer has made more money worldwide than Bohemian Rhapsody, meaning it's now the highest-grossing biopic ever.

The Wrap reports Oppenheimer has earned over $912 million globally after its ninth weekend in theaters, in which the film hauled in another $12 million. That pushed Oppenheimer ahead of Bohemian Rhapsody, about Freddie Mercury, which previously held the biopic record with $902 million. Oppenheimer's IMAX run has definitely played a significant role, as The Wrap notes it's made $179 million off those screens.

This isn't the first headline-worthy box office milestone for Oppenheimer, either. The movie--starring Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, and Florence Pugh--is director Christopher Nolan's biggest non-Batman film ever in the US. Activision Reportedly Believes Switch 2 Might Be Similar In Power To PS4/Xbox One, But Nothing Is Certain Yet

According to newly obtained emails from The Verge, Activision executives met with Nintendo executives in December 2022 to discuss the next Nintendo console.

Activision's Chris Schnakenberg said in an email that the new Nintendo platform--referred to as "NG Switch"--could be similar in technical proficiency to the PS4 and Xbox One. Schnakenberg said, "It would be helpful to secure early access to development hardware prototypes and prove that out nice and early."

Rockstar Celebrates GTA 5's 10th Anniversary, But Fans Didn't Get A GTA 6 Reveal

Grand Theft Auto V celebrated its 10th anniversary on Sunday, September 17, and Rockstar Games marked the milestone with a thank-you message to fans for their support over the past decade. Rockstar did not, however, say or tease anything about the next GTA game. There was no good reason to believe this would happen, but fans nonetheless thought it might.

As for the anniversary statement, Rockstar said, "We would like to thank you, our players, for your incredible support over the years. This amazing community is the reason GTAV has thrived across multiple console generations and given us the opportunity to grow and update GTA Online with new features and content over these past 10 years, and your support is truly humbling."
