F9 Conquers Box Office With Biggest US Opening Weekend Since 2019

F9, the latest movie in the Fast & Furious series, has scored the biggest opening weekend at the US box office since the end of 2019. The movie made $70 million in its first three days on release. Not only is this by far biggest domestic opening weekend of the pandemic era, it's the highest since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released in December 2019. As Box Office Mojo notes, F9 managed to exceed the $60 million opening weekend of the previous film in the series--2018's spin-off Hobbs and Shaw--with only 80% of the country's theaters open. The previous highest opening weekend gross of the last 18 months was A Quiet Place: Part II in May, which made $47.5 million. F9 opened in some international territories last month and has so far $404.8 million worldwide. A new Max Raid event has begun in Pokemon Sword and Shield. This time, tentacled Pokemon are appearing more frequently in Max Raid dens in both games, including Shiny Grapploct. You'll need to act quickly if you want to catch one, however, as the event only runs until June 27. Throughout the event, you'll be more likely to encounter Grapploct, Malamar, Octillery, and their pre-evolved forms in Max Raid dens across the Wild Area, Isle of Armor, and Crown Tundra. As previously mentioned, you'll also have a chance to find Shiny Grapploct in five-star Max Raids. Pokemon Go Raid Battles Are Getting An Update

Pokemon Go developer Niantic has outlined a slate of changes it will be making to Raid Battles. Beginning this summer, the studio will introduce a new feature called Trainer Achievements, and it will also implement various other quality-of-life improvements. As detailed on the official Pokemon Go blog, Trainer Achievements "are designed to celebrate Trainers of all levels for taking part in a raid." Players will receive a commendation after the battle for certain criteria, such as using a Mega-Evolved Pokemon or dealing the most damage. Niantic has outlined some of the feats that will net you a Trainer Achievement after the Raid: * Delivering the final attack * Dealing the most damage overall * Keeping a single Pokemon in battle for the longest time of all participants * Using the tallest Pokemon among all participants in battle * Joining the raid from furthest distance * Using a Mega-Evolved Pokemon during the battle * Changing your avatar's clothing or pose * Using the most Charged Attacks of all participants According to Niantic, you'll receive a medal the first time you earn a Trainer Achievement. Peacock Will Be Available on Amazon Fire Devices On June 24

Peacock will soon be available on Amazon Fire TV and Fire tablets in the US. NBCUniversal's streaming platform will be available on Amazon's devices from Thursday, June 24. The deal between Peacock and Amazon means that the Peacock app will be available on the entire Fire product line. Hulu has released the first official trailer for its upcoming comedy Only Murders in the Building, a spoof of--and homage to--true-crime podcasts and its devoted fandoms. Thankfully, one fan has taken the matter of a new F-Zero game into their own hands using a different Nintendo game altogether: Game Builder Garage. It actually launched on June 11 for Nintendo Switch, right in the midst of E3, and Nintendo didn't exactly draw attention to it during their various presentations or livestreams. A Quiet Place Part II Ruled The Box Office Again As In The Heights Danced Into Second Place

At a time when a feel-good movie with some catchy musical numbers could potentially do some big business, In the Heights easily took one of the top spots at the US box office over the weekend. While the musical may not have toppled A Quiet Place Part II from the number one position, the John Chu-directed film of the stage show still earned a respectable $11.4 million on 3,456 screens while also being available on HBO Max for subscribers. This past weekend's other big debut was Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, which landed in third place. A sequel to the 2018 film which unfortunately starred the voice of James Corden again, the film made $10.4 million, much less than the original movie's $25 million opening weekend. While it may not have been the best opening, children's movies in the current pandemic era have proven to have long-term appeal at cinemas, with Raya and the Last Dragon being a prime example. After 15 weeks, the Disney film has only just dropped out of the top ten at the US box office as it shows on fewer cinema screens, with the film earning a decent $54 million domestically. Fourth place belonged to The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, with the supernatural horror film grabbing $10 million in its second weekend. Dying Light 2 Dev Says Zombies Aren't Zombies In New E3 2021 Trailer

Dying Light 2 Stay Human developer Techland unveiled a new story trailer during the PC Gaming Show at E3 2021, where the studio discussed elements of the narrative and reiterated that the infected aren't zombies (despite looking and behaving a lot like your traditional zombie). In the four-minute-long trailer, Techland walked through the narrative setup, revealing that the virus from the first game spread to the sequel's setting. Dying Light 2 Stay Human takes place in 2036 and follows protagonist Aiden as he hunts for his sister Mia. The two were medically experimented on as kids, but after a fire, Aiden managed to escape. Where Mia is remains unknown, as she is the only one who can fill in the gaps to Aiden's story. What's most interesting about the video, though, is the classification of the game's zombies--er, Freakers. According to Techland, the infected aren't zombies at all but instead "half-alive, suffering people." Instead, it's projecting into the near future with Battlefield 2042, a multiplayer-focused entry that's imagining a future for us that's not particularly bright. Electronic Arts and DICE gave GameSpot an early look at Battlefield 2042 with a big rundown of some of what we can expect from the game and a chance to check out the game's reveal trailer. First and foremost, DICE is foregoing a single-player campaign for Battlefield 2042--instead, the developer says, it's focusing on "what it does best" with multiplayer. But that doesn't mean there's no narrative driving the conflict at the heart of the game. Instead, it's maybe a little too close to home, imagining a world 20 years from now that's been thrown into turmoil by real-world issues like climate change. Fortnite Season 7 Map Changes: Believer Beach, The Aftermath, And More

The aliens have officially arrived in Fortnite Season 7, and they've brought a slew of map changes with them. Fortnite's landscape is reliably changed with every new season, and Season 7: Invasion is no different. Here we'll break down all the new Places of Interest, sights to see, and--is that an alien mothership? It sure is. Believer Beach Sunny leads the alien welcoming committee. Perhaps the most fun map change with Season 7 is Believer Beach. Formerly Sweaty Sands, this boardwalk and beachside hangout now exists as a 24/7 welcoming committee to the would-be alien overlords if Dr. Slone's resistance fails their mission of sending the aliens back where they came from. All around the location are alien-themed Launch Pads, a human-made "crop circle" in the sand, and just general party vibes from the pro-alien contingent, like Battle Pass character Sunny, who wears a shirt that says "I don't believe in humans." It seems not everyone perceives the invaders to be a threat. Corny Complex Corny Complex acts as the IO's headquarters. The area northeast of the map's center is now Corny Complex and seems to be the main hub of IO activity on the island. Modder Spends Three Years Recreating (Almost) All Of GoldenEye 007 In Far Cry 5

A modder named Krollywood has recreated almost all of GoldenEye 007's single-player campaign in Far Cry 5. Krollywood's map-by-map approach includes every core level in the era-defining N64 shooter, with the exception of the two bonus levels. Krollywood told Kotaku that the process took about 1,400 hours over the period of nearly three years. While Krollywood says that they're a fan of both games, they prefer Far Cry 5's level editor because of its ease of use compared to other games. It also includes many assets and objects from other Ubisoft games like Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs, which made it easier to recreate the environments from Goldeneye 007. In other Far Cry news, Ubisoft recently revealed that Far Cry 6 will be coming out on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Stadia, PS4, and PS5 on October 6. Unfortunately for Krollywood, Far Cry 6 will not feature a level editor. We do know for a fact that Far Cry 6 will be at Ubisoft's E3 show, so check it out if you're interested. Then again, they told Kotaku that they plan to play "other games" now that they've completed their project, so good for them.

Halo: MCC Will Add Firefight To Social Games Match Composer In Season 7

Season 7 of Halo: The Master Chief Collection will make it easier for players to hop into a game of Firefight, according to a developer update from 343 Industries. Specifically, Firefight is being added to Halo: The Master Chief Collection's social games match composer with the game's latest update. When Season 7 launches, players should simply be able to go to the social games menu and choose to search for a game of Firefight. Naturally, crossplay will be enabled for anyone that searches for a Firefight match this way. Currently, 343 Industries is finishing up testing for integrating Firefight into Halo: The Master Chief Collection's social games menu. Once the feature is ironed out, the developer hopes that the game mode, which currently has its own separate menu, will be easier to access for players. AMC Makes Almost $600 Million Selling More Shares

As one of the "meme stocks" made popular by Reddit's army of dedicated retail traders, AMC has once again sold off a bunch of its hyped-up stock to raise funds. After raising $230 million last week from the sale of 8.5 million shares, AMC has now sold another 11.55 million shares, netting them another $587.4 million. Following a terrible year for its business, AMC's stock was languishing around $2 a share at the start of this year, before attracting the attention of the community of retail traders behind GameStop's meteoric rise. Since then AMC stock has stayed around $50 a share, though AMC's announcement that it would sell off a large number of shares caused fluctuations between $37.66 and $68.80, Deadline reports. Shares eventually closed at $51.31, down 18%. AMC has embraced its enthusiastic retail traders, who now make up about 80% of its shareholders.
